Troop
Scribe Notes 2002-2003
January, 2003. Troop Scribe Mike C. On
the January campout we went skiing. We all slept in a shelter
instead of tents. The next day we ate breakfast and set off.
When we got to Alpine Valley, we got our boots and ski's and
set for the slopes. We all got 1 star, and that meant you
were a beginner. To get 2 stars you had to do a snowplow and
basic turning. 2 stars meant you were intermediate skier.
Once you had those you could go for 3 stars and that was the
highest. You had to do a hockey stop and schussing or in other
words controlled turns to slow you down. 1 star= bunny hills,
2 stars= blue squares, and 3 stars= Black diamond. In my opinion,
this trip was one of the best yet.
October, 2002. Troop Scribe Mike C.On
our October campout, we went to Camp Tomo Chi Chi Knolls.
We got there at about 7:45 pm. It was dark as if it were midnight.
We set up camp in the dark. All we had for light was flashlights
and lanterns. We all set up our tents first, then fly's, and
finally our personal gear in our tents. The set up took about
2 ½ hours of getting ready. It was a cold night if
you ask me, but hey, that's my opinion! Some people were out
in an instant like me, but others kept talking.
In the morning of the next day everyone wanted to sleep instead
of getting up at a 7:30 am. Everyone got up slowly and went
to the warm, toasty fire. It was a cool, frosty morning and
the sun wasn't up high at all. The cooks got the food ready
for their patrol members. There were four patrols, not including
the adult patrol. The patrols ate and went to the flag ceremony.
After the flag ceremony the patrols got ready for the inspections
of each troop. After that, we heard about what we were doing
for the day. The patrols got their assignments and left. They
were trying to do 7 out of 7 activities. Our patrol only did
4 out of 7. After our activity some patrols went to the big
field and played football. We had to go back and make dinner.
The patrols were called for dinner and they ate. After that
we went to the bon fire and all the troops were there. There
were skits and announcements. There was a food contest (who
made the best food). We came in 3rd with 3 other people. That
night other people and I went to our tents right away and
fell asleep after the busy day.
September, 2002. Troop Scribe Dan D. This summer 46
Troop 14 Scouts went to Camp Mach-Kin-O-Siew. Camp "Mac"
is about a 6-½ hour drive from La Grange. It is located
in Northern Wisconsin. Everyone met at the Methodist church
at 6:15 AM, and we hit the road by 7:00 as planned. When we
arrived at camp the first task was to unload all of the gear
from the cars and put it on the truck that transported everything
to our campsite. Luckily we were camping at Beaver Point,
which is the closest campsite to Gilwell. Gilwell is the center
of camp, and it is by the commissary, the waterfront, and
many of the places we had to go.
Once our gear arrived at our campsite we had to set up camp.
We all had regular A-frame Boy Scout tents with cots to sleep
on. Mosquito netting was once again a must have to survive
through the nights.
After everybody was done setting up their tents and had all
of their gear stowed away we had some free time until it started
to rain. Unfortunately we didn't get the dining flys up before
the rains came, so those went up in the pouring rain. It was
a long day, so it was lights out early for everyone that night.
The rest of the week at camp was bright and sunny. Every
day we would wake up and have breakfast. Then everyone would
go to their merit badge classes, and then come back for lunch.
In the afternoon some scouts continued earning merit badges
while other scouts had free time to do whatever they wanted
to do.
My favorite thing at camp was the water front activities.
I liked to swim and go boating.
I hope that everyone had a great week at camp, and I hope
to see everyone there again next summer.
Have fun over the summer! Have fun at Camp Mac! Have fun
earning a merit badge!
July 2002. Troop Scribe Dan D. Now that the dog days
of summer are here it is a good time to work on a Merit Badge.
Just because the troop is not meeting over the summer that
doesn't mean that you can't keep working towards earning additional
merit badges.
There are many badges that are fun - and easy - to earn over
the summer. To earn a merit badge first you need to figure
out which one you want to earn. Then you need to get the appropriate
merit badge book, so that you know what you need to do to
complete the badge requirements. A great place to find the
up to date merit badges and their requirements is at www.meritbadge.com.
Once you have decided which merit badge you want to work
on you need to get a blue card. You can get a blue card from
any scout leader. Once you have the blue card you need to
find a BSA certified merit badge counselor. The counselor
will certify that you have completed - or partially completed
- the requirements to earn a merit badge. Be sure not to misplace
your blue cards. When you have completed all of the merit
badge requirements you talk with your counselor, and get your
blue card signed.
Many of us went to Camp Mac at the end of July. This was
a great place to work on merit badges. Remember, when you
want to earn a merit badge you should pick one that will be
fun. Don't forget that there are a number of merit badges
that are required for Eagle Scout.
Have fun over the summer! Have fun at Camp Mac! Have fun
earning a merit badge!
